Award prospects for local butchers
Date published: 18 October 2012
Butchers and farm shops in the North West could be in line for a top award, at the BPEX roadshow next month.
One highlight is the hotly contested product evaluation event, where a team of expert judges will put locally-made sausages, pies, bacon and other pork products under intense scrutiny. With gold, silver and bronze awards up for grabs, plus the chance of earning the prized crown of Overall Champion for the North West, it’s a chance local businesses can’t afford to miss.
Any independent retail butcher or farm shop making their own pork products in the North West is eligible to enter one or all of the ten product categories. These are:
1. Traditional Pork Sausage
2. Speciality Pork Sausage
3. Traditional Pork Pies
4. Speciality Hot Eating Pork Pies or Pasties
5. Home Cured Bacon and Gammon
6. Young Sausage Maker
7. Speciality Pork Products
8. Black Pudding and Pork Offal Products
9. Pork Ready Meals
10. Pork Burgers
Each product will be independently judged and given an award based on its score. At the end of the evening, the highest scoring gold award winner in each category will be crowned ‘category champion’, before one is chosen as Overall Champion for the region.
This accolade is a fantastic way to get recognition. Last years’ Champion Muffs of Bromborough described their achievement as ‘incredible’, adding: “The interest in our business and products as a result has been unbelievable!”
BPEX butchery and product development manager, Keith Fisher, said: “We’re delighted to embark on our ninth season of butcher roadshows. As well as rewarding butchers whose pork products stand out in terms of quality, excellence and innovation, it gives local businesses a chance to network and browse trade stands.
“Bolton is the third stop of the 2012-2013 season and we’re looking forward to welcoming butchers of all ages along – after all, we know there are some great products to be found in the region!”
Entry forms and guidelines can be downloaded from http://porkforbutchers.bpex.org.uk.
Butchers are welcome even if they’re not entering products; its free to attend and they get the chance to meet industry experts and suppliers, and pick up new product ideas.
