Chamber News: Danny Alexander Drops In

Date published: 11 October 2012

Chamber chiefs had the chance to pose some questions to the Treasury’s second in command, when Rt Hon Danny Alexander MP paid a flying visit to the Chamber. The Chief Secretary to the Treasury was in town and took the opportunity to visit the Chamber to find out about what local businesses are saying about economic conditions.

During the 30 minute meeting the Chamber’s Chief Economist, Dr Brian Sloan, briefed Mr Alexander on the headlines from the soon to be released Quarter 3 Quarterly Economic Survey report. In addition, Mr Alexander was updated on the key issues being raised at the recent Action For Business Forums and given a short overview of what Chamber members want from the Chancellor's Autumn Statement, due in December.

Chamber Chief Executive, Clive Memmott, said: “Whilst it was only a brief visit, it was long enough to get across to Mr Alexander what the general feelings of our members are at present in these challenging trading conditions. We also discussed broader issues such as the recent debacle around the West Coast main line franchise, which Mr Alexander isn’t directly responsible for but which ultimately plays a huge role in the UK economy.

“Mr Alexander was impressed with the work of the Chamber and thankful for the chance to hear what our members are telling us about current conditions. It is also a good reflection on the relationship we have built up with the Liberal Democrat team in the City Council.”
