Avoid the Crackdown: Check Your Waste Collector Online

Date published: 07 December 2005

Rochdale & Oldham Groundwork Trust are reminding local businesses that every business has a legal duty to ensure its waste is properly disposed of. This ‘Duty of Care’ extends to checking that anyone who collects your waste is licensed to remove it and making sure you get and keep the correct paperwork from them.

Illegal operators who fly-tip waste are facing a crackdown. Recently introduced powers for local authorities and the Environment Agency to recover the cost of clearing up waste crime from the offenders include fines of up to £50,000 and 5 years in prison.

There is now a quick and easy way to check that your waste contractor is licensed. You can search online by postcode, town, company name or licence number via the Environment Agency website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk

For more information on waste licences and Duty of Care responsibilities businesses can contact Groundwork 0161 624 1444.
