Bill and Derek with Right First Time Training DVD
AVS Television Productions Ltd, in conjunction with Akzo Nobel launched the ‘Right First Time,’ training DVD at the “Thatcham Focus” exhibition. The DVD demonstrates how to perform the perfect repair; it is intended to be used by colleges, bodyshops, and suppliers to the automotive industry.
Training colleges can invest in a 'College Teaching Pack' - this pack has the DVD as well as a CD ROM. The CD ROM contains all of the video clips in the DVD, plus 28 JPEG images and 2 'Word' documents which contain the scripts for each programme. There is also a contact page for further reference information. Lecturers can use this material to create their own PowerPoint presentation for all NVQ level students. Each DVD provides a definitive guide to each step of the repair process, the role of each member of staff involved in the repair process and the equipment used.
MANCAT invested in the AVS 'College Teaching Pack' for their state of the art training centre in Openshaw.
A spokesman for Motor Industry Skills Manchester said: "there has been no investment in teaching material for this sector of the motor industry, until AVS produced 'Right First Time'. We received an evaluation DVD from AVS and we were very impressed with the quality of the product: Live filming, 2D & 3D computer graphics and an easy to navigate DVD made it a welcome addition for our lecturers to use. We invested in the 'College Teaching Pack' and use the DVD & CD ROM material on a daily basis. It is perfect for both us and our students".
Filmed in the Akzo Nobel training centre at Abingdon and on site at Karl Vella, Preston, the DVD has been put together by experts in bodyshop training. The DVD is split into two sections:
The Learning Zone: 39 Minutes duration + 18 Chapters
This consists of 18 chapters, which explains the different steps of the repair process, the tools used and the importance of good housekeeping within each bodyshop and correct maintenance of bodyshop equipment.
A Typical Repair: 23 minutes duration + 10 Chapters
This shows a walk through of a typical repair, performed at Akzo Nobel. By following these procedures, bodyshops can reduce costly rework and members of staff can compare their own repair techniques with the standards that are on the DVD. Students can learn tips, techniques and how to avoid common mistakes.
The DVD also clearly explains how the costs of a repair are broken down and how the bodyshop achieves a profit, emphasising the importance of performing a repair ‘right first time’ and as efficiently as possible.
“To run as effective and profitable an operation as possible, good training is of paramount importance to the bodyshop – helping retain staff and working to a high standard whilst maintaining profitability,” commented Gill Gordon, Marketing Manager at Akzo Nobel. “We got involved in this project because we believe passionately in investing in staff. The DVD is a cost effective way for bodyshops and colleges to access our expertise.”
Karl Vella commented, “the DVD is well put together and the information is clear and concise without too much technical jargon.”
