A successful training programme for building trades is on the lookout for local companies in need of its trainees. Rochdale Building Trades Agency is a not-for-profit training centre, which provides paid training for individuals from Rochdale borough in a select number of trades.
Working with local building companies the agency has been able to identify the skill shortages that they suffer from and have designed its training accordingly. The trainees are taking courses in plastering or multi-skilling finishing trades (consisting of wall and floor tiling, patch plastering, brickwork and repair, basic plumbing, joinery and roofing) as well as essential modules covering all aspects of health and safety.
Darryl Lawrence of the Rochdale Housing Initiative said, "Our trainees are an ideal solution to the problems of obtaining good quality staff without having to pay expensive agency costs, and minimises the financial risk to
prospective employers."
There is no mentoring or apprenticeship aspect to the scheme- we do not need any commitment of time or money from employers, other than the individual's wages!" The trainees are 'job-ready' - they are fully trained in highly practical skills and would be able to work from day one."
Unlike employment agencies, no fees are charged for taking on our trainees.Prospective employers are welcome to visit the workshop to see the quality of the training and meet the trainees, whether they are looking for an employee or are just curious. Additionally employers can influence the type of training that is given to local people so that it meets their specific need."
Darryl added, "Many employers are put off by the amount of red tape involved in taking on people from government training schemes. As this is a local scheme, taking on our trainees is simple and straightforward."If you would like to know more, either visit the agency on Haynes St in Rochdale, or contact Cliff Rogers on 01706 719530.
