I am proud to be a born and bred Rochdalian. I was educated locally at Bishop Henshaw School and then worked for almost 40 years helping people as a public servant.

I live locally with my wife Susan and we raised our two daughters here, both attending local schools.

I’m now retired but still keep active helping people in our local community. I am a passionate Rochdale AFC fan and as a season ticket holder you’ll often see me at Spotland and at away games supporting ‘The Dale’.

For nearly a year, I’ve been out and about speaking to residents in Bamford, Oulder Hill, Oakenrod, Marland, Sudden and Brimrod. I have been happy to help residents with the many local issues they’ve raised with me:

  • Getting a commitment from the Chair of Rochdale Township to tackle the ongoing issue of parking problems around Battersby Street, Chadwick Hall Road, Ford Gardens, Yealand Close and Marcliffe Drive.
  • Getting the same commitment from the Chair of Township to tackle parking issues around Oulder Hill Drive, Taunton Avenue, Fieldhead Avenue, Kenion Road, Norwich Avenue and Moorgate Avenue and of course Bury Road.
  • Getting £5, 000 from the Labour Council for a traffic survey to look into the issue of a pedestrian crossing at the Sandy Lane/Bury Road/Roch Valley Way Junction.
  • Pressing the council to sort out the eyesore on the site of the former Oakenrod School.
  • Raising the issue of speeding traffic on War Office Road, Norden Road and Bury Road.
  • Getting a commitment from the Chair of Rochdale Township to tackle parking issues on Belgium Street and Mansfield Road.
  • Lobbying our Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to protect Bamford’s Green Belt in his review of the Greater Manchester Spatial Strategy. Andy supports my campaign and wants me to represent the views of Bamford residents.
  • Working with our MP Liz McInnes to make certain the path between Rochbury Close and Northdene Drive remains a path and doesn’t become a bridleway.
  • Raising the problem of anti-social behaviour around Springfield Park entrance with the Public Realm team to increase patrols to give residents some peace of mind.
  • Raising the issue of anti-social behaviour – noise issues, speeding and vandalism – in Brimrod and Sudden with the Public Realm team to increase patrols.
  • I’ve had several back alleys in the Brimrod area cleaned up by the Labour Council’s ‘Clean & Green’ Team.
  • I’ve had the Council’s ‘Clean & Green’ Team clean up the pathway between Holborn Street and Brimrod Lane and remove the excess litter on Law Street.

This is my home town and my local community and everything that happens here affects me as a resident, so I will continue to work in the local community and to help people even if I don’t get elected – that is a promise.

I’m very happy to support the new policies Labour’s putting forward for Rochdale this year:

  • An extra £12 million to resurface roads and replace pavements. Over the last five years Labour has put almost an extra £20 million into Highway repairs, but we realise we need to do more. Patching and filling potholes is not enough. We need to resurface roads properly.
  • Labour is moving from five days a week cleaning and road sweeping in Rochdale Town Centre to a full seven days a week. We recognise the weekend economy generates plenty of rubbish, so we are acting to address that.
  • Coming down hard on illegal fly tipping. Anti-social people who dump rubbish are a menace to us all, so Labour is getting tough with these offenders. We now impose on the spot fines of £400 for anyone caught or proven to be fly tipping and we can now impound and crush any vehicle used in the act of fly tipping.

If you have any issues or problems you may wish me to take up for you please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07926 569746  or by email: martingayres@gmail.com

I hope you will honour me with your vote on 3 May and I thank you for very kindly reading my pitch on Rochdale Online.
