Hornets and Crusaders chairman seek to put a lid on bad blood between the two clubs

Date published: 29 June 2015

North Wales Crusaders and Rochdale Hornets have committed to build bridges between the two sides at all levels and reaffirm both clubs commitment to each other as members of the Rugby League family after tensions had been raised following the incident involving Tony Suffolk and Alex Thompson in the recent game between the two clubs, which provoked a level of negativity and hostility at a number of levels, particularly through the use of social media.

The incident having now been dealt with by the RFL disciplinary tribunal, the clubs have reaffirmed their commitment that it's time to move on and focus on what is a fantastically competitive League One season.

Rochdale Hornets chairman Mark Wynn commented “I've had really positive discussions after calling Ian Edwards, the Crusaders Chairman and we both share the view it's time to look to the future.”

“Both clubs have had a competitive rivalry for the last few years but perhaps in recent times that has escalated a little too much and we are right to remind ourselves that this is a family game that we're all passionate about and we should act accordingly at all levels.”

He continued “League One right now is as good as it's ever been and Rochdale Hornets and North Wales Crusaders are both a massive part of that, so it's important both clubs focus on the positives.”

Crusaders Chairman Edwards said “I share Mark's concerns that across both clubs we need to stop anything escalating to a level where it's detrimental to the game. Sport is all about rivalry and competition and there's nothing wrong with that – but it should extend only to the 80 minutes on the pitch.”

“At the end of the day, we all need to respect each others passion for the sport and work positively to promote what is the greatest game of all. I share Mark's view at all levels, players, staff, fans, everyone, we all need to put tensions behind us and get on with a positive outlook for the future.”

Both clubs are right back into action this weekend as Rochdale Hornets entertain Hemel Stags, with both co-operative clubs fighting for the Supporters Direct Shield as an added bonus – whilst Crusaders take on table topping Keighley Cougars at the Racecourse.

Both clubs wish each other the best of fortunes in what will be two fiercely contested games.
