Mayfield Preview
Date published: 18 June 2015
Mayfield have their longest trip of the season on Saturday as they travel to face the resurgent Cumbrian side Wath Brow Hornets.
Wath Brow had a poor start to the season losing their first four games but they have more than made up for that winning five of their last six outings, two of them being in the cup.
Their league position somewhat belies their form, they have six points and are four places from the bottom, but the premier division is so tight this year that a couple of wins could see any team leapfrogging the teams around them.
Matt Calland's team are no respecters of the form book and will be going to Cumbria with only one thing on their minds, victory
Despite last week’s opponents, West Hull, having two outstanding props, Mayfield’s powerful pack again dominated throughout. It’s hard to pick a stand out player in the forwards as they have all been in outstanding after a shaky start to the season.
The backs have definitely benefitted from the form of the half back partnership of Paul Brearley and Sam Butterworth and the return of Lewis Sheridan after his spell with Hornets.
There are a couple of injury niggles and Butterworth and Calland will leave it late to name the squad for the game but rest assured this side will be looking for the two points to lift them further up the league.
NWML Trophy
Dave Harmer is again unavailable so Craig White will be taking over the NWML side as they face the tough challenge of Leigh Miners on their own ground in the cup.
White will be hoping that the team show the same commitment they have over the last couple of weeks.
Despite the results not going their way, there has been massive improvement and that will be needed on Saturday as they try to overturn their opponents.
The youngsters again will take centre stage with Kenny Rowlands and Jordan Strand in particular looking hungry for rugby.
Last week’s team benefitted massively from the inclusion of tough forward Mark Biggins and he gave the forwards a lesson in how to play the game, hopefully they will have learned from that and take that with them on Saturday.
