Norden ease into second round of Wood Cup

Date published: 01 June 2015

Norden eased into the second round of the JW Lees Bitter Wood Cup when they beat Oldham by nine wickets at Stag Park on Sunday.

Oldham made a reasonable start before Babar Hussein was caught in the slips off Dean Lord’s bowling, and without addition to the total of 19 Hamza Hussain was clean bowled by Martin Smith.

Abid Fazil and Aneeq Hassan featured in a decent partnership and took the score up to 44 before the former was bowled by Lord who finished his six over stint with 2-17.

The hard hitting Hassan looked comfortable, and he blasted two sixes on his way to a bright 34 off 55 deliveries faced before he top edged to Steve Wild to give Hashum Malik a wicket in his first over.

The rest of the batsmen struggled to make an impact as Daniel Salpietro took three for 13 and the tail was mopped up by Wild, Malik and Chris Hartley.

Salpietro and Simon Harman threatened to carry Norden to a 10 wickets win, with both playing some vicious shots in one over which cost Oldham 17 runs.

But Oldham did get a little joy when Harman danced out of his crease to be stumped by Dannish Ateeq.

Salpietro went on to finish unbeaten on 76 before receiving the man of the match award.
Full marks to the players of both teams who wanted to get the game played and were prepared to wait until the ground dried out following overnight rain.
