Ashton no answers to Norden’s pace attack

Ashton had no answers to Norden’s pace attack as the Stags swept to victory in a Tom Hardman T20 group match at Woodhouse Lane on Saturday.

The visitors slumped to three for two, and six batsmen were out with only 14 runs on the board.

Ben Johnson did show the wicket was not full of demons as he hit three fours and two big sixes in an unbeaten 27, but only he and Tom Hanks managed to get into double figures.

Norden’s fielding was top class. Dominic Humphreys took a good catch when falling backwards, Simon Harman took a good low catch in the covers, and Harman also jumped up and lifted an arm to pluck a shot out of the air.

Martin Smith ended his maximum of four overs with three wickets for two runs, Dean Lord picked up three for nine, Chris Hartley two for 12, and Steve Wild 1-15.

Ashton were all out for 52 and Norden went on to win by 9 wickets.

The batsman to go was Hashum Malik, leg before to Bradley Woolley.

Skipper on the day Malik later said: “I didn’t bowl because I wanted to give the other lads a chance. Maybe I should have done the same with the batting.”

Daniel Salpietro scored 32 and Ash Gowers 20 as Norden wrapped up the win.
