BTP urge fans to behave sensibly
Date published: 22 May 2008
British Transport Police (BTP) is calling on football fans from both Rochdale and Stockport attending the Football League play-offs at Wembley Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday (26 May) to behave sensibly and travel safely so that they can fully enjoy the match.
BTP will have officers travelling on some trains from Manchester to London as well as patrols at main rail stations and London Underground interchanges as fans make their way to Wembley.
Supporters are reminded this weekend to check rail services before travelling, as extensive engineering works are scheduled on the West Coast Mainline which will increase some journey times.
BTP Superintendent Graham Bamford said. “We look forward to ensuring that all those who travel to the match by train get there safely and enjoy themselves.
“We know that the vast majority of fans will behave and travel without incident. Our aim is to reassure rail passengers and staff and there will be a high visibility police presence with officers travelling on some train services.
“Our message to those traveling to the game is to enjoy yourselves, but be respectful of others. BTP will be out in force and football banning orders will be sought for anyone committing a football related offence.”
Fans are also reminded that alcohol controls will be in place on the London Underground. Police will have bins for fans to discard their bottles of alcohol and cans before entering key stations.
Superintendent John Hennigan is coordinating BTP’s Policing operation on the Underground. He said: "We’re certainly not there to spoil the fun but alcohol, bottles and the like, combined with high emotions and large crowds, simply don’t mix. We are letting fans know about these controls so they know what we are planning and what to expect.
