Mayfield 2nds 8 – 22 Wigan St Patrick's
Date published: 27 February 2014
In the last pre-season test before the start of the new term, Mayfield lost against Wigan St Patrick's in a benchmark game as both sides are in the same division in the upcoming season.
In the heavy conditions both sides showed that pre-season training has worked well with the ball in constant motion.
The forwards started the game strongly, but early pressure from St Pats saw them score three early tries; all converted.
This spark Mayfield into life and the mercurial stand-off John Foy began to run the show, along with strong running from the Percy brothers and Nyland up front, resulting in sustained pressure on the visitor’s line, but the final pass just not wielding any rewards.
Early in the second half excellent approach play and quick play balls lead to Nicholas Hargreaves crashing over for an un-converted try.
A mistake in the Mayfield attack served St Pats with a gifted chance to hit straight back with a try out wide - which wasn’t converted.
The game then ebbed and flowed with chances for both teams spurned.
The worsening weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of either team.
The final score came through the bullish running of Hargreaves with the second of his brace.
Coach Duncan Simpson applauded the Mayfield effort and team moral and said: "‘With more work on the training paddock this week, I am confident we will win more than lose this season, and with the introduction of experienced players to come, the season is looking very rosy indeed."
Man-of-the-match was awarded to loose forward Lee Atkinson.
