Mayfield preview

Date published: 20 February 2014

Mayfield entertain one of the greatest names in amateur rugby league in the country as Wigan St Pats arrive at the Mayfield Sports Centre for a Tetley’s Challenge Cup fixture.

Mayfield travelled to Skirlaugh in the first round returning victorious after a thrilling game in terrible conditions.

St Pats made the shorter journey to Widnes where they comfortably dispatched their opponents.

Mayfield are looking strong with a large squad training enthusiastically; there will be plenty of tough decisions to made by coaches Calland and Butterworth with players returning for the game. Todd O’Brien is back from holiday while Matty Moores, Paul Brearley and Si Moore are looking to force their way back in after injuries have kept them out of the last games.

St Pats had an average season last year winning 13 of their 26 games, averaging just over 20 points per game while letting in just under 30, so they are a side that can be beaten.

Mayfield go in to the game full of confidence, and although they are underdogs they have the class and the players to cause another upset against Premier Division opponents.

Mayfield have won the last 16 games, averaging almost 50 points per game and this will give St Pats something to think about as they make their preparations.

Sponsors for this game are Dave Marcroft, Ace Electrical and Wigan Superleague Darts.

The second team also face St Pats in a pre-season friendly. The coaching team of  Simpson, Greaves and White have a strong squad available to them with any players who don’t make the first team dropping in to strengthen the outfit.

The St Pats second team has had a tough couple of seasons and is looking to get back to winning ways.
