Youngsters offered opportunity to learn boxing skills

Date published: 17 February 2014

The young people of central Rochdale have the opportunity to learn basic boxing skills and participate in fitness training sessions free at Wardleworth Community Centre.

Doulot Miah, Centre Manager at Wardleworth Community Centre, said: "The aim is to provide activity for young people at a time of the week they usually have very little to do, to promote health and fitness and to tackle ant-social behaviour that occurs at these times due to young people having no organised fun activities to access."

The eight-week introductory boxing course has been organised by Youth Connections in partnership with Wardleworth Community Centre, and finded by Forever Manchester Community Foundation, is for young people aged under 16.

Mr Miah said: "We had a good turn-out at the first session and received great feedback from the young people.

Hasan Iqbal (aged 9), who attended the first session, said: "I really enjoyed the session, especially punching the pads really fast, it’s very tiring but fun."

Mr Miah added: "We have found that boxing is a great way for young people to keep fit as it is fun, varied and entertaining.

"The boxing tutor tailors the sessions to the abilities of the participants, and you can hear from all their faces and excited noise from the hall that they are thoroughly enjoying it.

"Due to its popularity we are looking to continue the boxing fitness sessions past the funded programme."
