Mayfield 58 - 10 Folly Lane

Date published: 10 February 2014

In atrocious conditions at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday Mayfield handed out a lesson in rugby league to Folly Lane.

The comprehensive win saw them through to the second round of the Oldham Standard Cup.

Mayfield were stronger in every department than their opponents and only two small lapses allowed Folly to get on the score sheet.

Coaches Calland and Butterworth may have preferred stronger opposition in the last game before making the step up in class when they take on the mighty Wigan St Pats in the Tetley Challenge Cup at the Mayfield sports centre.

The gulf in class was obvious from early on in the game as the Mayfield forwards pummelled the line. Folly held out for five minutes but Joe Qanuici broke through for the opening try. Converted by Lewis Sheridan, 6 – 0.

The scores came at regular intervals after that with Carl Abram and Liam Whalley grabbing a brace each and Aidy Gleeson one in a powerful display of rugby.

Despite the scoreline Folly never gave in and managed to get the final score of the half from a clever kick through.

With a half time score of 34 – 4 the game was effectively over and Calland and Butterworth began to rotate the players, trying out different combinations.

The scoring rate continued through the second half with Callum Marriott opening the account after backing up a brilliant Sam Butterworth break.

Other tries came from John Marsland a second Gleeson effort and Nick Hargreaves rounding off a productive afternoon for the Mayfield.

Folly grabbed a score in between to make the final score 58 – 10.

On a day that was made for forwards rugby it was testament to the side that over half the tries came from the backs, showing Mayfield's willingness to play fast open rugby in any conditions.

However, the sizeable crowd was left in no doubt that the basis for this win was the outstanding performance of the pack, with Mark Biggins in particular standing head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch. His appetite for work was phenomenal taking drive after drive and making crunching tackle after tackle.

This was by no means a one man effort and Biggins was well supported by Callum Marriott Sean Mulcahy and Aidy Gleeson. The forwards were marshalled by Sam Butterworth and Declan Sheridan who were both outstanding once again.

The coaches had made five changes from the team that beat Skirlaugh last week and all five performed well, so with more players returning from injury and holiday for the next game there are going to be some tough decisions to make come team selection but all coaches would agree that these are good problems to have.

Mayfield Team: Lewis Sheridan, Rob Kershaw, Carl Abram, Liam Whalley, John Foy, Joe Qanuici, Sam Butterworth, Mark Biggins, Declan Sheridan, Luke Sampson, Callum Marriott, Sean Mulcahy, Aidan Gleeson, John Marsland, Seta Tala, Komai Nualamatua, Nick Hargreaves, Ben Duffy.
