New boys look to impress

Date published: 08 January 2014

Rochdale Hornets head coach Ian Talbot is set to run the rule over his squad this Sunday as Hornets take on Keighley Cougars in there first pre-season friendly.

Talbot has new signings James Dandy and Sean Casey available for selection, but Hornets fans may have to wait to see art teacher come front row mountain Liam Gilchrist in action as a persistent ankle injury puts him in doubt.

Fellow front rower Chris Tyrer is definitely out as he recovers from surgery on the groin injury he sustained last season.

Tongan Sydney Havea is not available, as the RFL have cut short a trial due to visa complications.

Hornets won't be short on front row options, however, as amateur international Tony Suffolk has been signed following a spell in Australia and France.

Union convert Dan Waddy, formerly of Sale Sharks, joins returning Adam Bowman and BARLA international Ste Marsh as trialists in the pack.

Lancashire and Ashton Bears centre Andy Ball and Frenchman Julien Lasserre, who is experienced at this level following a stint with Toulose, will be looking to impress in the backs.

Livewire wing/centre Casey Mayberry is also set for a return and with Hornets retaining the majority of the 2013 promotion winning squad, there is reason for optimism ahead.

The fixture takes place at Cougar Park, Keighley, 3pm kick off with admission charged at £10 adults, £5 concessions.
