Copperpot through to cup final

Date published: 22 April 2008

Copperpot took on Success to the Plough for the third time in a week, this time in the semi final of the Chris Shyne trophy.

Success went on the attack from the start but, against the run of the early exchanges, Copperpot had the ball in the back of the net within six minutes. A free kick given away by Gary Mason 25 yards inside the Success half was sent into the area and without a touch went straight into the net with stand in Success keeper McDermot in no mans land!

Success were shocked by this and put Copperpot on the back foot for the rest of the half, but try as they might they could not find a way past the Copperpot defence.

Half Time: Copperpot 1 - 0 Success to the Plough

Success began the second half as they did the first, pushing forward and were in command in midfield, but again the Copperpot back line of held firm and as is often the case in football if you don't take your chances you get hit on the break and sure enough Copperpot hit Success with a sucker punch and went 2-0 up against the run of play.

With time running out Success hit the bar and several other goalmouth scrambles also saw the ball cleared before Success got hit with another sucker punch as Copperpot went 3-0 up.

It was game over but Success got a consolation goal when Holmes drilled home a penalty.

Full Time: Copperpot 3 - 1 Success to the Plough

Copperpot could not have complained if Plough had won easily and that had Success manager Phil Crowther distraught. Copperpot spokesman Steve Whitehead agreed saying Success had "65% to 70% of the game" and Copperpot had three chances, including the first goal "which was a cross"!

Copperpot play Littleborough in the final at Springhill Stadium on Friday 25 April.
