Former Rochdale AFC player Joe Thompson diagnosed with cancer at age 24

Former Rochdale AFC winger Joe Thompson has been diagnosed with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 24. Joe, who currently plays for Tranmere Rovers was sent for tests after feeling ill which revealed he had cancer.

The 24-year-old midfielder will shortly begin a six month course of chemotherapy.

Rochdale born Thompson began his career at his home town club making over 100 appearances. He then moved to Tranmere Rovers in 2012.

A statement from Rochdale Football club said: “Everyone at Rochdale Football Club is stunned and devastated to hear that former Dale winger Joe Thompson has been diagnosed with cancer. Our thoughts are with Joe and his family at this time, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

Tranmere Rovers Chief Executive Mick Horton said: “We are stunned by this news and all our thoughts are with Joe and his family. Joe will get all the love and support we can give him as he undergoes his treatment.

“We ask that the privacy of Joe and his family is respected and we will share information with supporters as and when we receive it. I’m sure all of our fans will join us in wishing him a full and quick recovery.”

Manager Ronnie Moore added: “Joe is a fantastic young man and he will be missed around Prenton Park while he has treatment. He has the full support of all the coaching staff and his team mates and we will do everything we can to help him make a full recovery.”

Nodular sclerosing is the most common of all types of Hodgkin’s disease in the UK. It is usually found at an early stage when lymph glands in the neck become enlarged.
