Date published: 28 October 2013

An electrifying atmosphere filled Spotland Stadium this evening (Monday 28 October) as fans of both Fiji and Ireland packed the venue for the Rugby World Cup.

Fans of both Fiji and Ireland expect a close game and have waited months for tonight's battle.

Before the match, fans met at The Flying Horse Hotel for pre-match drinks and food from Ireland and Fiji.

Gavin and Lorraine Crippin were undecided on a team to support. Gavin said: "It's going to be a close game but I think it is going to be 36-18 to Fiji." Lorraine added: "We have been to Cardiff and Warrington and are now at Rochdale so we're really looking forward to it."

Fiona Bowker, who is part of the committee for Fiji and secretary of Rochdale Cobras, is cheering for Fiji and said: "The atmosphere today has been really good.

"It is going to be a close game but it's nice to see everyone coming together for rugby."

Kevin Corcoran and Darren Neville were attending the game together but were supporting opposite teams. Kevin was supporting Ireland due to his Irish roots and Darren was supporting Fiji. Kevin said: "Unfortunately I think Fiji are going to win." Darren added: "Of coure they are."

Jodie and Adam were heading to the game to support Ireland. Adam said: "My family is Irish so thats why I'm supporting them." Jodie added: "It should be a good atmosphere.

"It is about time they brought something like this to Rochdale."

Mike Foster, who had his fingers crossed for a Fiji win, said: "I'm not sure how good Ireland are but I know Fiji have a good strong team so I think they are going to win."

Epeli Bulicri, who was at the Flying Horse, was heading to the game wearing his Fiji shirt. He said: "I'm Fijian so I'm supporting Fiji all the way. I think Fiji will win but it will be a close game."

Fans made their way from The Flying Horse to Spotland Stadium in an organised walk with up to one hundred fans walking.
