Rugby: Busy week for Mayfield youngsters

Date published: 18 July 2013

In a busy week of rugby league Mayfield Mustangs fielded six teams in games across the North West at various age groups.

The Under 7s enjoyed a great game in the hot sun when they entertained Orrell St James at the Mayfield Sports Centre. All the players did extremely well in the conditions, with Isaac Reid being named player of the match and Jamie Burke top tackler. Jamie Howe, Mason Andrews and Smith should all get a special mention as well.

The Under 8s played at home against Folly Lane where they ran out 9 – 2 winners. Harry Sheridan was awarded the player of the match Kyle Durrand got the coaches award while Brad Rowley was chosen as top tackler. The coaches were very pleased with the performance and said that all players should be proud of their contribution.

The Under 9s entertained Burtonwood from Warrington, going down narrowly four tries to five. Mayfield's tries came from Ellis Tracey (2), Alfie Glover and a fine solo effort from Kyle Corcoron. The side played some fine rugby with some great set plays but unfortunately the defence was not as good as it has been recently.

The Under 11s scored an excellent win at Woolston where they ran in ten tries in a 6 – 66 victory. There were some notable performances in both attack and defence with tries coming at regular intervals in set plays straight from the training ground. Dylan Stott was awarded the MOM by the opposition coaches but he was pushed close by Ben Higginson with four tries. Also on the score sheet were Josh Cragg (2), Chris Flemming (2), Dylan Stott, and Jack Green.

The Under 12s were on the road travelling to Widnes side Westbank Bears where they recorded a fine 62 – 0 victory. This was a great performance from the side with Jack Taylor getting the MOM award and Sam Milne and Oliver Lee the coaches’ awards. There was also a special mention for Reece Hamlett, who on his debut managed to grab a try with his first run.

The Under 14s entertained Clockface in a fantastic game which saw Mayfield eventually come through 16 – 12 winners. Sam Kershaw grabbed the winning try in a kick and chase from the half way when he managed to out sprint three defenders to touch down for his second try. Clockface were in second place in the league but were no match for a spirited Mayfield side. Kyle Hilton scored the opening try and Kershaw secured two conversions for a famous victory.

The Under 15s travelled to Saddleworth in the Lancashire Cup where they ran out 48 – 12 winners. Cameron Connolly was the stand out player in the match while Matthew Ashton and Shaun Hurley top the tackle count while Zac Hartley received the coaches’ award in this fantastic win.

The Under 16s notched up their eighth consecutive win as they beat bottom club Ince Rose Bridge 36 – 8 to claim second spot in the premier division. This was a hard fought game from two committed sides with Mayfield being too strong for the opposition in the end. Tries came from Ratu, Rush, Higginson, Ogden, Sheridan and Pearson with Higginson adding a perfect six out of six conversions.
