Heywood Seconds make short work of Werneth

Date published: 05 July 2013

Heywood Seconds made short work of Werneth at Crimble to continue their quest for a league and cup double.

Werneth won the toss and were soon in trouble thanks to the new ball attack of Rick Purser and Lee Grogan.

Only Werneth number four James Taylor looked in any sort of form, smashing Purser for consecutive sixes and taking advantage of the odd wayward delivery from Grogan.

However, with wickets falling at the other end, it was always an uphill task for Werneth and they succumbed for a poor 112 off just 37.2 overs.

Purser and Sam Byrne took three wickets apiece, while Grogan and Dom Fawcett took two apiece.

Early on in the Heywood innings, no one batted with any real fluency. However, Sean Burrill, who is starting to impress, despite the odd blip, hit a good 24 before Adam Fawcett saw Heywood home to a five point win.

Smethurst, who was delighted with two wins over the weekend, said: “All in all it was a very satisfactory weekend with 10 points picked up and some good individual performances.”
