Mayfield preview

Date published: 04 July 2013

After wins in the last two outings, Mayfield travel to Dewsbury on Saturday hoping to make it three out of three. They will have to be on top form though to secure the win with five players missing due to holidays.

Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth are not fazed though knowing they now have the strength in depth that had been missing earlier in the season.

Sam Butterworth said: “We are missing key players in key positions but we know the lads that step in will be giving their all for the blue and white. It’s games like this that show what you are made of and you look to certain players to come to the fore and take the reins. We’ve talked about the game plan and the changes and everyone is happy and just waiting for kick off.”

The coaches will delay naming the team until noon Saturday, with the bus setting off at 12.30.

Dewsbury are a couple of places below Mayfield with four wins from twelve starts but they will be no pushovers after losing narrowly last week to local rivals Milford. They are letting in an average of 30 points a game while scoring around 20.

Mayfield have had no difficulty in scoring points but the defence has had some questionable moments. Last week's game encapsulated the season so far, scoring fifty but letting in 38.

After the disappointment of the last three weeks, when the fixtures have all been cancelled at the last minute, Dunc Simpson and Craig White will be hoping this week that they finally get the lads on the pitch.

Craig White says: “We have some good young lads with us at the moment and need to give them games. Sean Hill is as good as anyone on his day and Gavin Low has come on leaps and bounds as has Luke Hartley. The Percy brothers have been awesome in games so far and they have the experience of players like Andy Battersby, Anthony Greaves and Joe Hart to pull them through the tough times.”

Saturday's opponents are Warrington outfit Crosfields, a side who Mayfield have had some tremendous tussles with over the years and Saturday should be no different.

Fixtures 06.07.13
