Littleborough trio help county’s disabled cricket team to victory

Date published: 01 June 2013

All-rounder Callum Savage, of Littleborough’s Fothergill and Harvey's Cricket Club, was among the run-scorers as Lancashire stormed to victory on their National Disabled Cricket League debut.

Savage, from Middleton, and club mates Nigel Robinson from Milnrow and Littleborough’s John Simpson all played their part as Lancashire beat  Northamptonshire by 136 runs at Denton West.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Lancashire lost Robinson and fellow opener Ste Kenny for just seven runs apiece to leave them 21/2.

However, Savage, batting at number three, scored 34 and shared a third-wicket stand of 80 with Mark McDonald (33) before both were dismissed in consecutive balls.

Zak Green, 56 not out, and Stefan Holmes, 43, ensured Lancashire posted a competitive total of 218/6 from their 40 overs however, with Simpson contributing an unbeaten three.

Robinson struck early in Northants’ reply, bowling opener Brendan Gilbert for four, as he and Savage (0-13 from four overs) kept the run rate down.

And Waqas Khan followed up by blowing the Northants middle order away to record impressive figures of 4-16 from his six overs.

Six batsmen were dismissed without scoring with Mark McDonald (2-3), Adam Wilson (2-0) and Stefan Holmes (1-6) sharing the other wickets as the visitors slumped to 82 all out – with Simpson bagging a catch.

Coach Alan Foster said: “Credit for this win must go to all the team who really played as a squad and for each other.”

The Red Rose are next in action at Middleton Cricket Club on Sunday 9 June, when they face Derbyshire.

All spectators are welcome to go along for a 1pm start.
