Rochdale Mayfield 48-18 Skirlaugh

Date published: 12 May 2013

Rochdale Mayfield eased through to the second round of the National Conference Challenge Cup with a nine try victory over Premier Division team Skirlaugh.

The visitors from Hull were blown away with quick play the balls and strong defence as Matt Calland's men scored five first half tries and three goals for a 26-0 half time lead.

Ben Naulatua started the scoring, toucing down in the corner from a stunning cut out pass from Jo Qanuici.

Paul Brearley scored next following more great play from Qanuici, who hit the line and off loaded.

Next on the score sheet was Simon Moore who found a great line off Brearley' s short pass. Brearley took the spoils himself next, as Dan Kaufman broke from his own line and stepped through the cover to half way. Eric Johnson sped through the retreating defence and handed onto the supporting Brearley.

Kage Duffy backed up a Todd O'Brien break for a try, and with O'Brien's three goals, an unassailable 26 point lead.

Skirlaugh have a long proud history in the top level of amateur rugby league and they scored two tries on the back of some Mayfield indiscipline.

The fight back was halted though by a run from Mitch Spackman Spackman who burst tackles 20 metres out to charge over with three defenders hitching a ride.

Spotlight managed another try but Mayfield rounded off a top performance with two tries from Adian Gleeson, the second a lung busting 75 metre run, for the final 48-18 scoreline.

Mayfield' s quick play in attack was in sparkling form, but this victory was equally built on solid goal line defence when Skirlaugh threatened.
