Date published: 02 May 2013

Thomas Haddley was signed up two years ago for a scholarship to play for Salford City Reds and has now received an offer to play for Wales Schoolboys Squad.

Tom, a Year 11 pupil at Wardle High School, started playing rugby around five years ago a club called Milnrow Cobras who are now known as the Rochdale Cobras.

He was offered a scholarship for Salford City Reds when he was just 14 before being offered the chance to play for Wales Schoolboys Squad this year.

He currently still plays for Rochdale Cobras Under 16s as well as Rochdale Cobras Open Age, Salford City Reds Under 16s as well as now playing for Wales Schoolboys.

Tom joined the Rochdale Cobras Under 16s as his friend played for them and he was offered to play for Open Age when he turned 16. He is now the captain for the Rochdale Cobras Under 16s.

Tom is hopeful at the end of this year, when he leaves school, Salford will offer him a contract, which will give him a chance to go professional and potentially play in the Super League.

Tom said: “My friends Dylan Cain and Tom Pilling have encouraged me to do well and all my teachers have been pleased for me and my success.”

Mr Steve Wilkinson, Tom’s P.E. teacher said: “Tom has been a pleasure to teach throughout the time he has been at school. He has a fantastic attitude during lessons and is motivated to achieve at a high level. He is always willing to go that extra step to improve himself and strives to be the best.”

Tom is currently studying a BTEC in sport, which is a two year course which will allow him to gain 4 GCSEs. He has also won several awards and last year he came away as the Top Try Scorer, Player of the Year and Player's Player.
