Final call for Great Manchester Run entries

For those looking for a challenge next month, organisers of the UK’s most famous 10km event, the Bupa Great Manchester Run, are calling out to all runners in Rochdale to snap up the last few remaining places.

On Sunday 26 May, 40,000 runners will take to the streets of Manchester to try and beat their personal best in the 11th Bupa Great Manchester Run, while raising money for a host of charitable causes.

First held in May 2003, the event was created as a legacy for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has seen many world and Olympic champions take part. Last year, Haile Gebrselassie claimed his fifth title, while the women's race was won by Linet Masai.

David Hart, communications director at Nova International, organisers of the Bupa Great Manchester Run, said: “With less than 1,500 places remaining, runners wishing to sign themselves up and see the city’s streets like never before should get in touch soon so as not to miss out on this iconic race.

“Each year the runners outdo themselves with their outstanding dedication to both the race itself and the charity fundraising, with an estimated £25 million being raised since the first event 11 years ago.”

This year the race will be started by ex-Bolton Wanderers midfielder, Fabrice Muamba, who astounded medics with his recovery after he collapsed with sudden cardiac arrest while playing against Tottenham last year.

Amateur athletes will run alongside a star-studded line-up of celebrities, including Coronation Street’s Paula Lane (Kylie Platt), former Hollyoaks star Darren Jeffries (OB) and snooker player Shaun Murphy. BBC Radio 5 Live presenters George Riley and Rachel Burden will also be limbering up for the challenge.
