Mayfield review

Date published: 04 April 2013

Mayfield will be looking to put the disappointments of last weekend behind them as they entertain Wakefield based Stanley Rangers at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

Last weekend saw them lose controversially to Milford and then lose again in a thrilling Standard cup final against Waterhead.

Mayfield have a good record against Stanley with two good wins last season and will be hoping to carry on in the same vein.

Coaches Sam Butterworth and Matt Calland, although disappointed by the results, are still relatively happy with the performances.

"The way we played in the Milford game was particularly pleasing, we dominated them all over the park" said Calland. "We suffered at the hands of the officials and our frustration resulted in countless penalties and three sin bins which ultimately cost us the game. We know if we play the same standard of rugby today with a little better discipline we should take the two points on offer."

Derek Buckley takes his NWML side to Widnes to face West Bank.

West Bank have one win to their credit out of two starts.

Mayfield will be looking to continue the form they showed last weekend as they demolished Westhaughton in the Charity cup final.

Buckley is pleased with the way things are shaping up, with two wins on the bounce and he will be looking to make that three in Widnes today.

There have been some notable performances this season so far with the experienced players leading the way for the youngsters.

Craig White and Andy Batts have stood out, as have James Percy and George Yewdale.

Gavin Low is coming into his own now he has moved into the second row.

Paul Hancock seems to be settling after his move to scrum half, which allows Damian Corcoran to run the show from hooker.

There is a balanced look about the team.
