Mayfield beat the weather

Date published: 25 March 2013

Mayfield under 7s and under 8s emerged victorious over their opponents and the artic weather this weekend as they switched to an indoor venue for the visit of St Helens side, Blackbrook.

The visitors are renowned as one of the best junior Rugby league set ups in the Country, but Rochdale's best were more than a match for them at both age groups.

The under 8s had Ben Metcalfe and Taylor Hartley in strong straight running form and kept the Blackbrook attackers at bay with great tackling, led by the outstanding Henry Crichton-Allen.

Coach, and Mayfield open age player, John Marsland, was  proud of his charges, who sported there new playing kit, donated by Capstone Foster care.

The Mayfield under 7s team was also impressive and  scored tries through Issac Reid (2), Jamie Howe (2), Jamie Burke, Zak Wood, Billy Pickering and Vinny Wainwright.

Mayfield also showed a great appetite for defence and Johnny Joyce, Tyler Kenwright and Louis Gater tacked hard and fair to bring the visitors attack down time after time.

Top Tackler was Vinny Wainwright, with a non-stop display, and the 'Man of the Match' award went to Jamie Burke.

Both teams are still recruiting. Training is free and takes place at The Mayfield Sports Centre in Castleton every Saturday morning between 11 and 12.
