Mayfield Review

Date published: 21 March 2013

Mayfield will be looking to getting back to winning ways as Hunslet Warriors visit the Mayfield sports Centre. Hunslet have a reputation as a very physical side but that won’t bother Mayfield who have never been a team to shy out of a physical contest.

The last game at home against Millom was a decent team performance but the side will have to improve if they are to beat Hunslet. Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth have a full squad to select from with the inclusion of Dan Koffman who could make his debut in English rugby.

Si Moore and Luke Sampson are on top form at the moment as is Mitch Spackman who has proved a real find. Mitch made 43 tackles in the last game and took an impressive number of hit ups too.

Matt Ovington has slotted in well at full back and the team is looking forward to the  test. The coaching staff have had the team in training three nights a week this season, a measure of their desire to do well this season.

"We have a large squad and the competition for places is good for the players, they know there is no easy rides this year, all players must train hard and play hard if they want to be part of this team," said Calland.

"We know Hunslet will be a tough side but this doesn’t worry us we are concentrating on what we can do not what they can do. We know when we take the pitch we will have done all we can in preparation, the rest is down to the seventeen on the field and we feel we can compete against anyone in this division."

Derek Buckley and Anthony Greaves take their NWML side on the road with table topping Wigan St Cuthbert's being the destination. Like the conference side, the NWML side has been getting good numbers at training and has a large squad to select from.

There will be some tough decisions to be made before this game but both Buckley and Greaves are committed to putting out the best team on the day to gain the win. As usual there will be a good blend of youth and experience with a couple of squad players dropping in from the Conference side.
