Mayfield review

Date published: 07 March 2013

Mayfield play their first home league game off the season this weekend as they entertain Cumbrian visitors Millom.

The visitors recorded a good away win at Dewsbury last week while Mayfield went down heavily at East Leeds.

Determined not to repeat last week's result, coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth had the lads in on Wednesday night for a video review session followed by an intense defensive training session.

The team accepted responsibility for the defeat acknowledging they need to show more intensity and improve on defence. These aspects of the game will be remedied said Calland, "we were bellow par last week and we know we can do much better. We have some quality players and we expect quality rugby and that’s what we are aiming for today."

There could be team changes with a couple of new signings this week, Saqib Murtza has returned and Dan Koffman, a flying centre and brother of ex Mayfield favourite Michael Koffman, has been signed. Adam Dybdall and Jamie Hopkins have also returned to training after injury.

The coaches will leave selection until this morning so as to be sure of putting their best seventeen out on the pitch and get the two points on offer.

Derek Buckley's NWML side will be hoping to get off the mark today after Saddleworth cried off last week. The fixture sees them travel to Warrington to face Burtonwood.

Their opponents picked up a point last week in a scrappy draw at Crossfields.

Buckley has a large squad to select from and is expecting a couple of players from the first team squad too, he said: "We will delay selection until we know who is available but you can be sure we will have a strong seventeen out.

"We have the likes of Danny Chrimes and Andy Lee two experienced lads plus a couple of youngsters returning to the game after coming through the Mayfield Mustangs.

"We have trained very hard and on Tuesday we had a one hour yoga session just to mix things up a bit and also to improve flexibility and hopefully reduce the likelihood of injury.
