Mayfield Review

Date published: 01 March 2013

Saturday sees the start of the second summer season for both Mayfield open age teams the first team will compete in the National Conference League divison 1 and the second team will be in the North West Mens League division 3.

This opening fixture has the first team travelling to East Leeds.

These early games are tough to call but Mayfield go into this one brimming with confidence after an unblemished pre season with four wins from four starts.

Coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth are eager to get the season underway, their charges have done all that has been asked of them so far and the training has been good with a good number of players in attendance.

Butterworth says: “This is the biggest squad we’ve had in a while. In the past we’ve struggled with a small squad and this has taken its toll come the end of the season.

"We will be looking for a good start and then build from there.

"We are aiming for promotion this time around and we know there will be no easy games so we just have to go and be better than our opponents.

"We have some stand out players in key positions and the addition of our Australian contingent makes for an exciting mix and we really feel we are a team to be reckoned with.

The second team has the luxury of a home start to their campaign with Saddleworth being Saturday’s visitors; again the opponents are hard to guage but that will not worry Derek Buckley's side.

“We’ve had a team playing in the winter league” says Buckley, “and to be honest we’ve found it a struggle but the lads from the summer team have come back into training and we’ve made some massive strides in the last couple of weeks. There’s only one way to see how far you’ve come and that’s to get out on the pitch”.
