Mayfield 22 – 6 Crosfields

Date published: 18 February 2013

Mayfield continued their warm up for the season with a comfortable win over Crosfields at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday. The game was played in the memory of Lloyd Walsh and was a fitting tribute to him.

Mayfield used the day to give everyone a game and coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth had a twenty man squad with all of them getting a good run out.

After a slow start Crosfields drew first blood when their big centre crashed onto a ball and cruised through a gap untouched for a converted try. 0 – 6.

Mayfield battled on with John Stott organising the side and things improved steadily.

The introduction of Wayne Corcoran completed the team and Mayfield looked the real deal for the first time, a kick from Corcoran was collected by Alex West who then beat two defenders for an Aidan Gleeson converted try. 6 – 6.

Mayfield should have extended their lead after a forty metre break from Corcoran gave them great field position but the chance was wasted as the ball went to ground three tackles later. It took until just before half time for the next score when Todd O’brien broke the line and Corcoran powered over from acting half. 10 – 6.

Early in the second half Seta Tala pounced on a loose ball on the half way line and sprinted fifty metres to score under the sticks, Gleeson converted. 16 – 6.

Crosfields kept battling and only resolute defence from the Mayfield side kept them at bay. The impressive Matt Ovington was making ground every time he received the ball at full back and this was setting the platform for the forwards and in particular his fellow country man Mitch Spackman who worked tirelessly all afternoon.

As in the past two games Mayfield were playing well in patches and it must be said there is still room for improvement on the field but the coaches were reasonably happy with the all round performance.

Two more tries came, both from acting half back from, first Komai Nualamatua and then Todd O’brien this rounded off the scoring. 28 – 6.

Their were some good individual performances again with some good touches from Ieuan Higgs and John Stott while Seta Tala and Kristian Duffy linked up well together.

Forwards Mitch Spackman Luke Sampson And Eric Johnson were all outstanding while Joe Qanuici picked up the man-of-the-match award for a typical non-stop performance.

The idea of this game was to raise a little money for Lloyd's son Mason and to that end Mayfield chairman Simon Howe presented the fund with £350. The club and committee would like to thank all those who contributed on the day.
