Rochdale Hornets 20 - 22 Oldham Roughyeds

Date published: 17 February 2013

Oldham Roughyeds narrowly beat Hornets to win the Law Cup in a close encounter at Spotland.

Oldham took an early lead as the Hornets defence was caught napping and though Hornets hit back quickly with a try from Chris Baines, excellent play from Oldham saw a Lepori try to extend their lead before Hornets started to get into their stride and Sutton barged over, with Wheeler converting to peg Oldham back to a two point lead.

Midway through the first half and Hornets were now having the bets of the play and thought they had taken the lead only for the try to be disallowed. However, just before the half time whistle, Gaz Langley crashed in at the corner to put Hornets in front for the first time.

Half time: Hornets 14 - 12 Oldham

Oldham started the second half as they did the first with an early try and quickly extended their lead to eight points as they dominated possession.

It took until the last quarter of an hour before Hornets started to fire on all cylinders again and pressure the Oldham line. The pressure paid off when Martin Waring went over out wide, and with Chris Baines converting Oldham's lead was cut to just tow points with five minutes left to play.

Hornets gave it everything and it looked as though they would win the game with only ascends left on the clock when the ball was spilled close to the line but got the ball back from an Oldham error at a scrum, only for the high bomb on the hooter to be knocked into touch - Oldham breathed a sigh of relief as the hooter went.

Jamie Dallimore won the Oldham RL Heritage Trust man of the match for Oldham, with Gareth Langley being awarded the Karl Marriott shield as Hornets man of the match.
