Mayfield Review

Date published: 14 February 2013

As the next step in their pre season preparations Mayfield face Crosfields in a game dedicated to the memory of ex player Lloyd Walsh who died in November last year.

The game was the idea of Mayfield player John Marsland who was a close friend of Lloyds, and the purpose of the game is to aid in raising some funds for Lloyds young son, Mason.

Lloyd played his youth rugby with Mayfield before progressing to the open age side, he then left to play for Crosfields so it is wholly fitting that the two teams should play each other as both a tribute to Lloyd and as a means of providing some kind of support for Mason.

Once the teams take to the pitch this will be like any other game of rugby league with no quarter asked nor given and with this in mind Sam Butterworth and Matt Calland will be fielding their strongest possible side.

There were some positive signs in last weeks victory over St Annes so the team will be a similar one to the one that took the field in Oldham. Although Mayfield will be welcoming back to the squad, Todd O’brien, Kristian Duffy and Si Moore. As Calland says the season is fast approaching and we need to improve on last week, the result today is unimportant what matters is the way we play and learn from last week. That said we won’t be going out to lose, and Crosfields are a good side so we hope to impress the watching crowd and treat them to a game that is fitting to the memory of Lloyd.

Dave Marcroft of Ace Electrical is again running the sponsors box this season and is hoping to welcome several of last seasons to the game also anyone interested in sponsoring the club for the first time can get in on the action by contacting Dave on 07944737545 or Pete Duffy on 07831672240.

The admission charge is a minimum donation of £2.00 but spectators are free to give more in light of the cause, all gate receipts are to be donated to the fund for Mason. The game ko is 2.00 so come along and support a great cause and watch what promises to be a great game too.

Mayfield NWC are also at home in the winter league where their opponents are Eccles. Coach Derek Buckley is looking for the same commitment shown two weeks ago when the teams last met.

"We’ve worked hard in training since that heavy defeat at Eccles" said Buckley, "and we have a few new signings who look useful. We played well in spells and even dominated in spells, no mean feat when you’re playing what amounted to a conference league side. Sean Hill, Craig White and the James Percy did particularly well and are again looking to impress against Eccles."

Fixtures Saturday 16.02.13
