Rochdale Mayfield junior presentation

Date published: 06 February 2013

Rochdale Mayfield Mustangs ARLFC celebrated their presentation evening recently at their clubhouse just off Heywood Road in Castleton.

After a long season the club awarded its junior players with an event to remember with each team being honoured at the event with trophies for their endeavour.

The club were pleased to welcome current Huddersfield Giants Super League and England RL Scrum Half Luke Robinson to the club to present the awards.

Luke Robinson fresh from Giant's preseason training said: "It's great to see all these youngsters playing rugby league and quite obviously enjoying the game like I did as a young kid starting out!"

Also a guest of honour was the father of ex Mayfield RL player Lloyd Walsh who at the age of 20 suddenly died only a couple of weeks previously who was in attendance to present a trophy the club will now present annually to the junior player who has contributed most both on and off the field towards the Mustangs.

Club Secretary Paul Scanlon-Wells said: "It has been great having Luke Robinson here, he is someone the kids see on tv every week playing the same game as they do and they can see him as a role model. He has given up his Sunday afternoon to come along and present the awards and he has signed hundreds of autographs, had pictures taken with the kids and answered many questions on his life as a rugby league player."

The most prestigeous award in the Junior Presentation is the Carl Marriott Trophy, which is presented to recognise the efforts of a player who has continued his development in the game through hard work and determination as well as being an ambassador for the game at Mayfield. This year it went to Callum Connolly who has capped a great year by signing for his favourite team on scholarship, the Wigan Warriors RL.
