Christmas in training as title fight looms for local boxer

Date published: 21 December 2012

There will be little time for Christmas festivities and certainly no second-helping of plum pudding as 20-year old local boxer Andrew Kremner gets stuck into a serious training programme for two January fights. Andrew is a former pupil of Hopwood Hall College and has seen his fighting career go from strength to strength in the past 12 months.

As well as his scheduled fight on his home turf in Salford on 12 January, as previously reported on Rochdale Online, Andrew has now heard that he is to have a crack at the North West light-welterweight title and belt on the 26 January.

An excited but quietly determined Andrew told us: “As I am boxing on the 12 January in Salford this means no Christmas or New Year celebrations will take place but that fight should be a good warm up for my shot at the title..

“The fight for the North West belt is probably the biggest of my career so far and I want to get it 100% right and come up with a great win. So this means training right though the holiday; Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the same at New Year.

“I am fighting for the belt in Leigh on the current holder’s home show but I am not fazed by this. I've done it all before and am confident of ripping the title away from him with the guidance of my Bridgewater coaches Neil Ashton and Lee Whitehead.

“Recently my favourite boxer Michael Gomez has come to Bridgewater Salford Gym to do some top-level coaching. He held titles such as IBF Inter-Continental featherweight title; and the British, WBO Inter-Continental, WBA Inter-Continental and WBU super featherweight..

“He does pad work with me teaching me shots he used to throw. Hopefully he will teach me the combination that knocked out Alex Arthur in his most recognised fight.

"2013 looks to be a really big and busy year for me. I don't see why I can't progress the way I have in the last year under Lee and Neil. They have been in the sport all their lives and I never stop learning with them.”

Although Andrew is his own biggest critic, and prefers to go for the knock out decision, some of his best fights have been won on tactical ability where he has worn his opponents down with his stamina and his technical mastery of the sport.

So, while you are helping yourself to that third helping of trifle, spare a thought for Andrew as he puts in some work on the heavy bag or else, puts on his hoodie and gets out for a spot of serious road work.
