Rochdale 1 - 1 Bury (Bury win on pens)
Date published: 09 October 2012
Rochdale went out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on penalties after near neighbour’s Bury won 5-4 on penalties.
Ashley Grimes gave Dale an early lead but Stephen Schumacher levelled, after seeing his initial spot kick saved by Smith he turned home the rebound.
Craig Curran was sent off for Dale with 10 minutes remaining but the game ended in stalemate meaning penalties.
Coleman made four changes to the side which beat Accrington at the weekend. Ben Smith was given a start in goal whilst Peter Cavanagh returned after injury. Ray Putterill and Craig Curran were given starts with Andrew Tutte, Dele Adebola and Jason Kennedy rested.
The game got off to a lively start with Putterill almost breaking the deadlock inside 45 seconds. The winger picked up the ball on the half way line before driving forward and unleashing an unstoppable shot which cannoned back off the underside of the crossbar.
Moments later and Coleman’s pre-match plans were thrown into turmoil. Ryan Edwards had a nasty clash of heads with Matt Doherty with the Dale defender leaving the field on a stretcher, whilst Putterill picked up a suspected groin strain all within the opening nine minutes. Matt Pearson and Andrew Tutte replaced the injured duo.
The changes could have upset the Dale rhythm but they adapted very well to the early setbacks.
Rochdale took the lead on 18 minutes when Ashley Grimes curled a wonderful shot beyond Carson and into the bottom corner.
Grimes almost doubled his tally in first half stoppage time but his hooked shot was brilliantly saved by Carson.
With new manager Kevin Blackwell’s half time team talk still ringing in their ears, the visitors came out for the second half much brighter and were back on level terms within seven minutes of the restart. Phil Edwards was adjudged to have handled a shot in a packed penalty area by referee Madley who pointed to the spot. Shakers skipper Schumacher saw his penalty saved by Smith but the former Everton player turned home the loose ball.
The leveller buoyed the visitors but Dale were more of an attacking threat.
Rafferty saw his volley go just wide and Grimes volleyed horribly over when well placed.
With ten minutes remaining Dale were reduced to ten men for the third home game in a row when Craig Curran was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Bury keeper Carson. The striker mis-controlled a ball into the area and went in heavy on the keeper in trying to win the ball. The referee had little hesitation in showing the red card.
With the game level at the full time whistle it was down to penalties to decide the tie.
Tutte, Grimes, McIntyre and Bennett all scored for Dale but Phil Edwards saw his penalty saved which meant if defender Adam Lockwood scored Bury would be through; which he duly did.
It was tough luck on Rochdale who played the better football but ultimately fell short when it mattered most from 12 yards.
