Mayfield 34 – 20 St Jude

Date published: 08 October 2012

With seven of the squad missing Mayfield again showed the strength in depth they have at the club. With fifteen minutes gone St Jude were 0 – 8 up after catching their hosts napping in defence and then popping over a penalty.

Mayfield struck back and by half time had taken a 22 – 8 lead with some great rugby and some much improved defending.

Matt Calland and Paul Brearley were the stand out players in the first half with Calland grabbing two tries and Todd O’Brien and Luke Sampson one apiece.

After the slow start Mayfield dominated the middle section of the game with Rob Kershaw, Ben Simpson and Aidan Gleeson making hard yards up the middle while John Foy And Komai Namulatua exploiting the gaps out wide.

Jude never gave up the fight and in the last quarter of the game made a bit of come back after sloppy defending gave them tries out of nothing. In fact, if not for the outstanding defence of Ian Sampson and Ben Butterworth they may have posed a genuine threat late on in the game.

Paul Brearley’s try in the second half was something to see, held by four defenders he still managed to power his way to the line before reaching out and placing the ball under the sticks.

Mayfield could, in fact should have had at least two more tries but poor decisions cost them as they bombed the chances and then two equally bad defensive lapses allowed Jude to get back to 28 – 20 before Nick Hargreaves sealed the game for his side with a well taken try.

Sam Butterworth converted all but one of the tries to cap an impressive performance.

Brearley was the unanimous choice for Man-of-the-Match with Todd O’Brien and Rob Kershaw pushing him all the way.

Saturday's game was made possible with the help of the sponsors, Brookes Joinery and Kevin Brett and friends along with Ace Electrical and match ball sponsors Unique Sports.

Mayfield have two away games left to finish off the season.
