Rochdale Mayfield 96 - 10 Castleford Panthers

Date published: 26 September 2012

Mayfield put a depleted Castleford side to the sword, scoring 17 tries and 14 goals in a mamoth win in front of a large crowd at Mayfield Sports Centre.

Man of the match Aidan Gleeson opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, as he stepped through the defence 20 metres out, and powered through under the posts. Gleeson himself added the extras, as he did with 11 further conversions for a 16 point haul.

Impressive full back Ieuan Higgs added three conversions and also scored three tries for an 18 point total, and player coach Sam Butterworth also got the hat-trick, with three blistering first half breaks.

Other tries came from Jo Qanuici (2), Eric Johnson (2), Carl Abraham (2), Ian Sampson, Luke Sampson, Nick Hargreaves and Todd O'Brien, who saved the best until last as he followed Gleeson to (and through) the defensive line 40 metres out. Gleeson chipped over, regathered and chipped again for the jubilant O'Brien to fly over the line, at the close of the game.

Whilst the Castleford side struggled to compete on the day, they kept trying to the end, and in fact won the post match boat race, despite the last 'rower' getting more than a little wet.

Mayfield Team: Ieuan Higgs, Rob Kershaw, Carl Abraham, Nick Hargreaves, Ben Namulatua. Sam Butterworth, Paul Brearley. Jo Qanuici, Todd O'Brien, Aidan Gleeson, Ben Butterworth, Luke Sampson, Eric Johnson. Ian Sampson, Kristian Duffy, Ben Simpson, Matty Moores.
