Mayfield face York Acorn
Date published: 07 August 2012
A buoyant Mayfield travel to York Acorn in the Hattons Solicitors National Conference League Division 1 clash.
After a mid-season slump in form, Mayfield have begun to string together some impressive wins; including two away from home in the last three weeks. Today’s trip will hold no fears for the Rochdale side who also hope to welcome back a number of senior players who have been missing.
Player coach Matt Calland said: “For the last three games we have had up to eleven first team squad members unavailable for one reason or another. This makes our run of results even more impressive.
“Today we could see the return of Ben Simpson, Si Moore, Jack Ashworth and fellow coach Sam Butterworth. These players would be a massive boost to the team - not that we need a boost the way we are performing - but you can’t ignore players of the quality of these lads.
“Our first half performance against St. Annes last week was outstanding, with Paul Brearley showing some excellent touches along with Eric Johnson and Todd O’Brien. Rob Kershaw and John Foy teamed-up well and the whole team was buzzing.
“The second half was a different story; we lost our way a bit and we have talked about what we can do to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
Today’s opponents are a couple of places above Mayfield and just managed to scrape a victory at struggling Stanley Rangers last week. We are confident that we will go there and give a good account of ourselves and hopefully take two points which could see us move into the top six.
Lee Durrant’s Alliance side also entertain Wigan St. Judes at the Mayfield Sports Centre this afternoon. Durrant will be looking for a bit more commitment from his team after last week’s heavy defeat at Latchford.
Like the first team, Durrant will be looking to welcome back players who have been missing, and it is hoped that with a stronger side out they will be able to push Judes close.
Durrant said: “With the first team injury problems plus holidays and work commitments we have found it difficult this season, but hopefully we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
