Mayfield Match Review

Date published: 07 July 2012

With the National Conference side having no fixture today, it is the turn of the Alliance side to take centre stage with a home fixture against local rivals Oldham St Anne’s.

As with Mayfield, Anne’s have found it tough in this inaugural summer competition and have failed to yet register a win. They gave a good account of themselves against an in form Leyland team last week, although again they failed to register a win. Similarly, Mayfield went down to league leaders Halton, but showed some encouraging signs in doing so.

Coach Lee Durrant returns to the helm after topping up his tan in Skegness last week and he will be buoyed on hearing how last weeks scratch side performed.

Stand in coach, Dunc Simpson said: “We had eight players missing at Halton and still managed to put seventeen on the pitch, which was a great achievement. Even greater was the way the lads performed. Paul Hancock had a storming game until I replaced him with Curly Kershaw, as I looked for more pace in the middle.

“James and Billy Percy were strong in the forwards as was Craig White. Our backs, led by Andy Lee, are coming together now and this showed last week too with Dave Devlin and Sean Hill combining really well.

“Today will be a different story. Up against fellow strugglers, it can sometimes turn into a bit of a dog fight. Add to that the fact that it is a local derby and you see this has the makings of a great game.”

Durrant will have a bigger squad to select from this week and must be confident of turning Anne’s over at home and claiming a valuable two points.

NWML div 2; Mayfield v St Annes, ko 2.30
