Alliance at Halton
Date published: 04 July 2012
Mayfield Alliance went down 40 – 10 at league leaders Halton Farnworth last week.
Mayfield fielded a scratch side after cry offs and first team call ups robbed them of eight players. In the end, the score line actually flattered the home side, after a spirited performance from Mayfield had them rocking in the first half.
Mayfield scored first after strong running from James Percy and Billy Percy gave them good field position. Paul Hancock exploited this, putting Dave Devlin through the gap. Devlin raced forty yards before finding the supporting John Marsland who touched down to give his side the lead. Halton fought back and strong defence from Craig White and Luke Hartley kept them at bay.
It was only a matter of time before they got on the score sheet and within ten minutes they took the lead, adding another score soon after.
A deep kick from Andy Lee saw Halton pinned in their twenty. As they tried to work their way out, Marsland stepped in and intercepted the pass, then raced fifteen metres for a try which he converted himself. 12 – 10 and Mayfield looked like they were in with a shout. Unfortunately, that was their last score.
Halton played some great rugby and threw the ball about on their wide pitch.
Mayfield were unlucky not to score again with Joe Hart and Luke Hartley making breaks. In the end, the best side won but Mayfield took a lot of pride in the nature of the defeat.
Man of the match was awarded to Sean Hill, for an outstanding performance both in attack and most notably defence, due to his great use of his weight and strength.
