Rochdale Hornets celebrate its unique history and also promote the Fiji V Ireland Fixture in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup on Saturday the 23 of June at 6.00pm.
The Celebration will see the Rochdale Hornets Under 23`s take on the Fiji UK side in a special challenge match.
The Fiji UK side which is organised by Tabua Cakacaka, the Gateshead Thunder and former South Sydney prop forward is drawn from Fijians currently playing Rugby League and Union in the UK.
So the standard will be top draw and will be a real challenge for the young Hornets.
The game will be played at the Kingsway Park Sports Arena which is only a few hundred yards away from the site of the old Athletics Ground, the former home of the Hornets.
The Kingsway site is an excellent facility with 400 seats, floodlights and PA system. Kingsway also doubles as an athletics arena as well as hosting football and now Rugby League. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&om=1&safe=active&msa=0&msid=102411889008779642790.000001126b152778ffb91&ll=53.605811,-2.137581&spn=0.047769,0.114326&z=13
The link between Rochdale and Fiji dates back to 1961 when Hornets took the innovative step of recruiting Fijians to come to Rochdale to play Rugby League. Its is a possibly unique situation of a club side introducing a nation to a sport.
Rugby League in Fiji really began to grow in the early 1990`s and that growth has continued and it saw the Fijians reaching the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
So when Rochdale was awarded the Fiji V Ireland game in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup thousands of people across the borough were overjoyed.
The Rochdale Hornets Under 23`s V Fiji UK game is just part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness and interest in our Rugby League World Cup fixture.
The Olympic Torch is going through Rochdale on the same day as the Hornets U23`S v Fiji UK game and there will be a special Fiji V Ireland Tug of War Challenge in the Town Centre as well.
Hornets are also running a series of events during the summer to promote the club and celebrate its history and future.
In a special Twenty/20 Crickets Challenge the Hornets players are taking on the Hornets supporters at Milnrow Cricket Club on Sunday the 8 of July and the club is also running a trip to Wembley to mark the 90th anniversary of Hornets lifting the Challenge Cup for its first and only Time.
