Mayfield 30 – 14 Egremont
Date published: 04 June 2012
Mayfield made it seven games without defeat with a win against fourth placed Egremont at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.
This was probably Mayfield’s best performance this season and proof of their improvement.
The home side had signalled their intent right from the kick off and when prop Mark Biggins crashed onto a Todd O’Brien pass there was no stopping him as he powered over for a Ieuan Higgs converted try.
Within minutes Mayfield should have had a second try as a Paul Brearley pass was dropped with the line wide open.
Egremont worked the ball up field where a Mayfield knock on, then a penalty, gave them a repeat set; quick play the balls caught the home side out and the Cumbrians grabbed a try in the corner, 6 – 4.
Egremont started to show their class and a sustained spell of pressure in the Mayfield half would have resulted in points for them but for a magnificent defensive effort, with Jack Sampson and Kristian Duffy making try saving tackles.
When Mayfield eventually managed to get some possession they responded positively, Taurean Sheehan broke from his twenty passed to the supporting Sam Butterworth who carried the ball another 30 metres before giving it to Carl Abraham who couldn’t be caught from 15 metres for his first try, 10 – 4.
Egremont came back at Mayfield managing to draw level with a well worked try from their impressive centre, 10 – 10.
Mayfield responded well to the pressure and began to take the upper hand with Biggins, Si Moore and Aidan Gleeson in particular causing problems in the visitors defence.
Rob Kershaw and Paul Brearley both made yards and quick play the balls allowed Abraham the chance to sprint forty metres for his second try, giving his side the lead going in to half time, 14 – 10.
Coach Matt Calland asked for more of the same in the second half, adding that Egremont would not be able to stay with Mayfield if they carried on in the same vein.
Two minutes from the restart Todd O’Brien combined with Aidan Gleeson to put him over for a Ieuan Higgs converted try, 20 – 10.
Further tries came from O’Brien, converted by Higgs 26 – 10, and a great team effort which involved seven players before Paul Brearley managed to touch down for a well deserved try,30 – 10.
Egremont managed a late score to finish the game 30 – 14.
Mayfield showed touches of class during the game with Sam Butterworth marshalling his troops well and instilling a sense of self belief in them that shone through for long periods.
O’Brien and Eric Johnson were again outstanding whilst Mark Biggins showed he is force to be reckoned with in this division.
Also impressive was the way Butterworth and Brearley linked up well together which allowed the rest of the team the opportunity to play some good structured rugby.
Youngsters Jack Ashworth, Jake Boardman and Jack Sampson revelled in the space created by their team mates and were a constant threat to the opposition but Man-of-the-Match, awarded by the visiting coach, went to Taurean Sheehan who was non stop in both attack and defence.
