Mayfield review and Jubilee Fun Day
Date published: 30 May 2012
Mayfield face their toughest game for several weeks as in form Egremont visit the Mayfield sports centre. The visitors have only lost two games this season and are among the favourites for promotion come the end of the season. They ran in 58 points against Stanley last week but encouragingly for Mayfield they let in 30 points, suggesting that defence isn’t their strong point.
Mayfield are again missing players due to holidays and injuries but this will not worry the coaches Sam Butterworth and Matt Calland.
“The seventeen players who turned out last week proved they are good enough to compete against anybody in this division”, said Butterworth. "Teams like Egremont depend heavily on their forwards, and in the this weather that’s not always a good thing. We showed at Castleford Panthers last week that if we move the ball around the park we will burn out the big lads and that’s when our quicker players come to the fore, players like Jack Sampson, Ieuan Higgs and Rob Kershaw made a lot of yards for us.
"We once again go into this game full of confidence but at the same time respecting the achievements of our opponents.
"Taurean Sheehan, Todd O’Brien and Eric Johnson are on fire at the minute and the way they are bringing the other players into the game is great to see.
"Hopefully we will run Egremont ragged and if we stick to the game plan we should secure another two points.
In the sponsors Zone today with Ace Electrical are Steve Gartland and Associates along with Darren Warne joinery.
Mayfield have announced the appointment of Lee Durrant as new Alliance team coach. Lee is a well known figure within rugby league in Rochdale with an excellent pedigree. Mayfield chairman Simon Howe said: "Lee is a very welcome addition to the coaching staff at Mayfield having played here for many years. He is a very experienced campaigner having represented GB at BARLA level as well as having a spell at Hornets. We hope to have a long and successful relationship with him at the helm and wish him all the success.
"We would also like to thank Leon Ashworth for the many years service and dedication he has put into the team as both coach and as a player."
There is no fixture this week for the alliance team.
