Mayfield review

Date published: 23 May 2012

After four wins and a draw from their last five games Mayfield will board the coach to Castleford brimming with confidence on Saturday. Their opponents there will be Castleford Panthers.

Castleford Panthers have only one win and a draw to their credit so far this season and like last week's opponents will be looking to get their season on track with a win. Mayfield will be making a couple of enforced changes with players on holiday, there will also be a late fitness test for Matty Moores, who sustained ankle damage in last week's win over Stanningley.

Coaches Sam Butterworth and Matt Calland were pleased with the victory last week despite the stop start nature of the game. "Undoubtedly the referee was a little whistle happy", said Calland "but we also contributed to the stoppages ourselves with needless penalties and lost possession; we have worked hard at training to cut these mistakes out, but once we are on the field it’s up to the players to get it right. On the odd occasions the game was allowed to flow the opposition couldn’t live with us and I’m hoping that we can take that into this game.

"Sam Butterworth has come through two games unscathed and his inclusion has given us that extra dimension in attack; we are now looking a bit more like the finished article.

"Another area of concern has been our goal line defence and we have put a lot of time into putting that right so hopefully today we will reap the benefits and bring home another two points.

The alliance side entertain league leaders Bold Miners at the Mayfield sports Centre. Bold are undefeated so far and are recognised as the side to beat in this division. Mayfield have one win under their belt and will be going all out to get number two.

Interim coach Dunc Simpson is under no illusions about the task his side has on: "I was disappointed in the way we folded in the second half last week. We took the lead and held them at 12 all at half time but they just steam rollered us in the second half. We need to work on our fitness and our attitude. Fitness we can do on Tuesdays and Thursdays but attitude is up to individuals once we get that right we can start winning games and start to move up the table.
