Mayfield v Stanley Rangers

Date published: 15 May 2012

Stanley Rangers arrived at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday with a depleted squad and at the end of the game they must have wished they’d stayed at home.

Coach Sam Butterworth set the scene when, after just two minutes, he scythed through the defence for an Aiden Gleeson converted try.

The tries came thick and fast after that with Taurean Sheehan, Aiden Gleeson, Si Moore, Sean Snape, Eric Johnson, Paul Brearley, Todd O’Brien and Jack Ashworth all registering scores and Gleeson and Ieaun Higgs sharing the goal kicking responsibility.

The half time score was 50 – 0 and the game nothing more than a training session for Mayfield now.

The second half continued in the same vein with tries coming at regular intervals; Sam Butterworth claimed his second and Mayfield were scoring at will. Matt Calland got two, Jack Sampson one and Ben Butterworth and Paul Brearley rounded off the scoring with Gleeson and Higgs again sharing the goal kicking.

There’s not a lot to be gained from games like this but as Sam Butterworth said: "You can only play against what is on the pitch and in this case the opposition just wasn’t up to it.

"We played very well and scored tries from all over the pitch. It's difficult to single any one player out but the MOM award went to Aiden Gleeson who made yards every time he touched the ball. Johnson, O’Brien, Sheehan and Moore were also outstanding.

"Another very pleasing aspect was the clean sheet which showed our defence is improving and is capable of upping their game to keep the attacks at bay.

"We showed great spirit and never lost concentration, Matt Calland and I will be looking to the players to carry that on into next weeks game against Stanningley."
