Mayfield Try Stars

Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC is pleased to announce that the club are forming a new team which will play rugby league under the Mayfield banner.
The Club has been running the Mayfield Try Stars every Monday for the last few weeks which has seen the clubs coaches and first team players deliver session’s to participants with moderate to severe learning difficulties.
Mayfield, in partnership with Head of PE at Redwood School, Garry Smith, devised an initial session that provided core skill elements that lead onto small sided games, bringing in tackling, but to a modified level similar to the tackling in Masters Rugby League.
Head Coach of the project Aidan Gleeson said: “These kids have great skills and due to their disability work even harder at something to achieve what they can.
"We in this country have catered for disabled participants through wheelchair rugby, but have ignored these guys with cerebral palsy, autism, and brain injured participants and amputees for too long.”
Mayfield first teamer Taurean Sheehan added: “Most of these guys could play mainstream rugby league on a physical level, but would struggle on the decision making side of the game, however, we can act as a facilitator on the field and direct them around the park and improve their experience of the game.”
Mayfield Club Secretary Paul said: “The sessions have been well attended and have attracted participants from Redwood school as well as the general public who have heard about the sessions and have come along and joined in. We have also spoken to contacts at Newbridge School and Hathershaw in Oldham who are interested in getting involved in the game as well.”
The Mayfield Try Stars will play their first demonstration game at 2.30pm on Tuesday 5 June against the Mayfield Masters as part of the Rochdale Hornets Past Players Rochdale Rugby League Fun Day.
