Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC review
Date published: 09 May 2012
Mayfield face Stanley Rangers today for the second week on the trot. This is a game that Mayfield will go into with a degree of confidence after last week’s victory. That said they will certainly not be underestimating the Wakefield side who pushed them all the way in a nail biting encounter.
Saturday’s game is round one of the NCL cup, a competition Mayfield hope to do well in. Coach Matt Calland will welcome Simon Moore and Ben Butterworth back into the squad after missing last week’s game.
“The rest of the squad is fit and raring to go, we have built up a considerable squad over the last couple of months here at Mayfield, we struggled early on and to be fair we’re still not realising our full potential on the field but there are improvements every week and we are moving towards where Sam Butterworth and I want us to be.
“After our poor start we are now in a mid table position and have a bit of momentum at the minute taking five from the last six points. We hope to do well today in this cup competition, a good run in this will boost the teams’ confidence and that’s an important aspect of the game” said Calland.
Eric Johnson came back into the team last week and made an immediate impact he is a quality player with that added bit of spice that a team needs if they are to be successful, he came through the game with no problems so he will be in the running again today. Sam and I have had a difficult task at training this week, with a large squad there are going to be players who don’t make the seventeen but we will put out what we consider the strongest side to claim victory and put us in the hat for the next round.
In the sponsors Zone today with Ace Electrical will be SRB Plant Hire from Heywood and the Rochdale Borough Darts Squad, Unique Sports are the match ball sponsor.
Mayfields Alliance side are also at home on Saturday when the visitors are St Helens side Haresfinch. The two sides have identical records this season having both lost their two outings so far. This will count for nothing on the day though and you can be sure both sides will be going all out for that elusive first win. Leon Ashworths side have trained well this week and should, include some of the players who don’t make the cut for the conference side.
Mayfield are currently also looking at putting a third team out in the merit league where teams play on a more informal footing as and when required to enable this they require someone to take control of training and this person would also get involved with the alliance side giving long serving coach Leon Ashworth a much needed lift anybody interested should ring Curly on 07922 517 135.
