140 Years and Still Rowing Strong

This year Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club celebrate 140 years of top class rowing, quite an achievement for a small club nestled high up in the Pennines, Rowing at Hollingworth Lake has become more and more of a family affair. The 140 members range in age from 13 to 70, with daughters sons dads and mums, encouraged to compete at local and national events up and down the country during the Sprint and Head Seasons.

Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, despite being one of the smaller clubs in the U.K. have a reputation of boxing above their weight by regularly coaching local athletes to achieve National and International representation.

Stuart Sykes, Jessica Leyden, Ruth and Lucy Walczak, all local members who have learned their rowing skills on Hollingworth Lake have represented Great Britain at Junior level and Under 23 level.

Additionally it is a club that continually moves forward by organising and hosting National events that give a positive name to Littleborough, Rochdale and the surrounding areas. We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic facility in the shape of Hollingworth Lake available on our doorstep that other local towns or cities can only dream of.

The North of England Sprint Rowing Championships 2012

Hosted by Hollingworth Lake – Venue Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club

September 1 will see the return of this popular event to Hollingworth Lake. This event had to be cancelled in 2011 due to the on-going water works which saw the level of Hollingworth Lake drop quite considerably.

The North of England Sprint Rowing Championships are organised and hosted by Hollingworth Lake Rowing club members.

Rowing clubs from all over the country compete in the 500 metre sprint race.

The popularity of this event ensures that it is the second most popular one-day sprint rowing event in England, attracting some 350 entries. Added to this figure are the athletes coaches and supporters and it turns out to be a very busy day for all involved. Without the support of The Sailing Club and Water Activity Centre; who all get involved during the continuous 10 hour day of racing, this event would not take place. A great big thank you to them in helping to provide an exciting spectacle for competitors and on-lookers.

Junior GB athlete Jess Leyden

Jess has massive potential to reach the top, at 17 she is very highly thought of by GB rowing. We have put together a Facebook page in a bid to help find a sponsor or sponsors who can make donations through the sponsor section of the page or just get in touch for further information. Coaching and travel is not provided by GB rowing at this age-group: www.facebook.com/HollingworthLakeRowingClub
